Lightning Chapter 1

Chapter 1

- In her pouch stored a silver dagger and a small torchlight. It was the only possessions Rose had stolen because she did not approve of stealing. It was payment, she told herself but nothing could push away the guilt trapped inside of her. At that moment, footsteps could be clearly heard breaking the silence of the jungle.
She panicked. They’re back, she thought. They’ll force her back into that cellar and... and she would have to stay there and listen to those horrible noises! She shuddered and looked around a few seconds, listening to the footstep coming closer and closer. Finally, she spotted a bush and slipped into it, just in time too because at that moment a young boy came into sight.
She took a close look and the first thing she noticed was his beautiful blue eyes. They were dark sapphire, troubled but gorgeous which seemed to glow a little in the moonlight. He had pale blond hair which he ruffled slightly, tilting his head as though thinking about his next move. He was wearing a blue shirt and denim jeans which seemed to bring the colour in his eyes.
Rose frowned. She had worked at Little Brook for the past six years and they have no servants that last long besides Ivan and herself and currently no new ones. He couldn’t have been a master because she knew everyone of them. Guards she was more than familiar with since she had to walk through them and help the Brooks buy groceries.
The only possibility would be that he was the cook’s helper because she have never seen him before but why would anyone send the cook’s helper to get a run-away? How was he going to find a girl with a dagger weaponless...
Or not. She glanced down and spotted the long sword hanging loosely by his side. It look heavy and really long. It would be near impossible to harm him enough to run away without him catching or killing her. She fidgeted nervously, her posture anxiously waiting for him to check around. If he came near, she bolted. That was her best chance.

Damien froze in shock and stared right at the bushes, extremely positive that he just saw a pair of brown eyes glow yellow. It was definitely normal now but this was the middle of the night. It was impossible to have seen a yellow glow from nowhere. That had to be, without doubt, the monster he was told to kill. After all, they told him to come here and glowing eyes were signs of a monster, if he didn’t remember wrongly.
He went further casually, as though he didn’t see anything. He wanted it to be a perfect surprise attack, from the back. From what he heard, monsters were not the smallest creature and he was sure he needed the element of surprise, mixed with at least the little bit of head start.
He walked right past the bush and gave a small turn, walking from behind. He crept up, as quietly and quickly as humanly possible, hoping the monster wouldn’t make a dash for it although he was rather afraid of what he was about to face but his face was clear of emotions. With his heart pounding heart against his chest, he approached the bush and pried open the bushes gently.
His eyes met with a small girl, slightly younger than him perhaps with striking chocolate brown eyes. They glow of warmth but there was fear in them. Wavy raven black hair fell down her back, waist-length. She looked desperate but there was some kind of craving look in her eyes.
She looked nothing like what he was expecting. He was expecting something big and ugly, not something looking so innocent and, well, beautiful. He instantly remembered the glowing yellow eyes. As harmless as she might look, she was nothing close to it. Anything with glowing eyes was abnormal and this he was sure of.
Battle reflexes kicked in and the sword came out before he knew it. The girl had a dagger with her but she was obviously not trained. She held it wrongly and swung it wildly, the way a mad person would actually. He wondered if she was just mad but would a mad person’s eyes go yellow?
He swung it at her. One shot and she, being so tiny, would be over, or at least that’s what he thought. He was dead wrong. She dropped the attempt to use the dagger, a smart choice, at the last moment and ducked just underneath the sword. Taken by surprise, Damien relaxed his posture. She was now pretty much harmless without her weapon.
But with a sudden lightning speed, she lunged at him like a cornered small animal finding a way out. Except it was an intelligent one. She struck him right on his wrist with abnormal strength and he yowled in pain, dropping his sword. She picked it up and pointed it to his neck, a finger on her lips, telling him to be silent.
It wasn’t strength, it took him a few second to realize. Electricity, she had used that to attack him causing him to drop the knife. It was a move not anticipated by him since there was only one known lightning-user and Melanion was a male so... Who was she?
He would have asked that aloud if the lightning did not choose to strike at that exact timing. The girl dropped the sword in shock and gave and ear piercing scream, crouching down and curling into a small ball and Damien frowned. He couldn’t, he just couldn’t pick up his sword and attack something which looked so... vulnerable. She had tears running down her cheek, as she crouched down. She looked frightened, but also lonely, like she lost someone already.
He couldn’t really help what he did next, looking at the pitiful girl crying like there was no tomorrow. Plus, how much harm could a little ten-year-old, or at least that is what she looked like, do to him. He walked over cautiously, and finally picked up enough courage to plopped himself down behind her. By this time, the rain was pouring, covering up any traces of tears.

It didn’t go as plan. The boy had seemed to left and when Rose looked up, he was right in front of her. Unable to do anything else, she had brandished her knife at him unsuccessfully. After that, everything went in such a blur she wasn’t very sure what had happened herself. What she did know was that when she had the upper hand, lightning struck close to her. This time, it wasn’t imagination. It barely missed her.
She screamed and drop right down onto floor, gathering herself together as huddled as possible. Her memory traced back to the first night when there was a thunderstorm. She recalled running to the master, begging him to let her go somewhere besides the dark cellar for the night. He had thrown her and locked her back under the cellar.
She was frightened beyond words by then and couldn’t make a noise but she curled up, trying to block out the horrible noise. It was when she was wondering when she was going to get her voice back and start screaming till the whole house woke up, she felt a weak arm slip over her shoulder gently.
“Hey,” Ivan said. She had seen him around before and they slept together in the cellar but she had never really talked to or looked at him since she was forever thinking about ways to get out of here. No matter how hard she tried, there didn’t seem to be any way out. Ivan looked too neutral to confide in, at least in her opinion.
She shuddered. She would never let anyone come close to her in normal circumstances, especially after what her family, her very own family, had done to her. But the lightning was too flashing, thunder too loud. She was afraid and against her will, her body curled up against his her head leaning in on his pounding chest. He put both arms around her and and her throat unclenched it self. Her heart didn’t slow for a bit thought.
Now that she was so close to him, she noticed exactly how skinny he was. From what she heard, Ivan have been here since the age of three and they must have starved him from the way he looked. His cheeks were sunken and his skin so pale they look almost grey. He looked so unhealthy she wanted to puke. She wondered if she would become like that after three years but at least right now, she had her normal clear skin. She could not imagine looking like that.
It wasn’t that he didn’t look good. Through the sunken cheeks and silvery gray skin, you could clearly see the spirit which have not been depressed by those years being a servant. His eyes were shining green but no one would notice them if they did not pay close attention, which they don’t do to servants of course. They were rather strangely but still cleverly concealed. His brown hair was pressed almost flat on top of his head looking absolutely neat despite the conditions. He would’ve looked perfect, minus the unhealthy glow around him.
Another flash of lightning streaked through and it looked as though it missed the window by mere inches. It was followed immediately by the menacing low grumbling of the horrible thunder and she screamed. It was ear-piercing and any normal person would have shrunk back, away from that terrible shriek. Ivan didn’t. He held her tighter, not even flinching as she threw her arms around his neck, screaming.
It was the next day when she found herself lying comfortably on top a pile of clothings, male clothings which looked really old. They must belong to Ivan, she thought and she got up to look for him. She had just sat up when she spotted him leaning over the small kitchen with almost nothing, not nearly good enough for a kitchen but still, it was okay. She was going to go over and help him with making their own breakfast which he made daily because the cook was not instructed to cook for them when he swung around with a bowl of warm cereal. She sat them down in front of her.
“Eat,” he told her. “You need strength to work.” After an afterthought, he added, “And you should wipe that run-away look. You’ll get nowhere because they will suspect and pretty much have you watched.” Rose looked down, not knowing what to say but she wondered if that was the reason he looked so neutral, almost as though nothing mattered to him.
Their friendship had developed so much since then. He was her best friend, and perhaps a little more... Rose pushed the thought away and tears sprang into her eyes. She should not have run, like he told her to. Right now, he was probably being punished for trying to run away and probably even tortured for allowing her to escape.
They had heard the worst sound when they heard Mr. Brooks scream for the guards. “Get them!” He had yelled and it was the most unfortunate case because it sounded so near, too near. They weren’t wrong. Even though they continued running at top speed, two weak and rather unfed twelve-year olds could not make it faster than the well-trained guards.
“Run,” he had told her, pushing her forward, his eyes holding some kind of promise. “I’ll catch up.” Even then, Ivan had probably figured out it was impossible for both of them to make it but Rose did not. All she felt was panic with distraught fear and she knew Ivan was her best friend. She trusted him. She continued running and successfully climbed over the gate while Ivan hit one of the guards. He was weak but determination gave him a little strength and enough to stun the guard for a while.
The moment Rose was out of sight, he knew he had done it. She was gone, safe from this terror. He held out his hand and willingly returned. As much as he wanted to leave, he knew that it wouldn’t work. He’d just get even more punishment. He prayed she would be far away by the time they turn back for her.
“Umm...” a voice which did not belong in the memory broke her concentration. She glanced up and came face to face with the hot boy, she wasn’t going to deny it, who she thought was the cook’s assistant.
Despite her tears, she held out her hands in defeat. “Bring me back,” she sighed. “And punish me. Ivan was just following my idea.” Please, she hoped silently, don’t let me separate from him. At least there was the comfort of Ivan to look forward to when she returned, if he wasn’t already too damaged.
The boy looked puzzled, “Bring you back where?” he asked, not comprehending her words. He had previously thought he had ran into a monster but now that he thought about it, monsters are not lightning-user. She was one of them, and a strong one too. He needed to bring her back before Melanion got hold of her. Two lightning-users working together against them would be a tragedy. But having Melanion to torture this vulnerable girl wasn’t an option to. He intended to bring her back as it would help their case against Melanion and he would also gain some points with that drop-dead gorgeous young lady... um, girl, considering she looked ten.
It was her turn to look surprise as she gazed into his eyes, her chocolate brown eyes brimmed with red from the crying. “Aren’t you the cook’s assistant ordered to bring me back to Little Brook?” she asked him, her eyes wide with curiousity.
“Absolutely not,” he assured her. Then with a false anger, he added, “How could you think I was a servant? I am the son of the great leader!” This was true, though the anger was not. His family had always been ruling since the great fall of the young king about three centuries back. The young king had not wed yet and his most trusted right-handed man was handed the throne. Until now, there have not been any conquering because they peaceful people, with exception to all-powerful Melanion.
“Where can you take me to?” Rose questioned immediately, watching him carefully, studying his moves. She might need to know how to attack him if he was dangerous and if he got to angry and wanted to attack her... well, she needed to survive and find a way to get Ivan out or at the very least revenge. She tried not to think about it.
He laughed at her response. She was quite a straight-forward and rather simple girl as well. “You could begin with telling me your name,” he suggested with a mocking grin.
“Oh,” she caught her breath. Her only friend was Ivan and they had not met by telling names since they heard each other’s name when the master has called them out. She had completely forgotten to introduce herself. After years of being locked up, she had no knowledge whatsoever on how to live in these streets... or forest. Any help was certainly welcomed and being rather gullible, she was lucky to have ran into Damien rather than Melanion.
“Wipe that smirk off your face,” she told him sternly. “I’m Rosalinda. What’s your name?”
Damien tried not to laugh. “Damien. So Rose, would you kindly follow me back to my home so they can take care of you?” he looked her up and down for a while and added, “And feed you too.”
“Only friends call me Rose,” she snapped. “And fine!”
Damien rolled his eyes at her. “Be nicer if you want to come,” he advised her as he lead the way back to his kingdom. This was easy, he thought. He didn’t even need to convince her and he have gotten such a powerful tool, or person. She would be extremely useful against Melanion once she was trained since she was already able to strike so hard without training.
Rose was thinking of a good retort when the most unimaginable thought struck her. Ivan, her best friend, her companion, the only one who really understood her. He was gone, just like that. The only thing Rose wanted to do was to crouch down and cry, let them find her and even kill her. She didn’t care, she wanted to be with Ivan.
But she didn’t. Her mind was burning with red hot rage but on the outside, nothing showed on her appearance with exception to her fiery eyes. Now, she needed to get out of this place, this horrifying place where lightning could hit her any moment, into safety before her plan for revenge may began. She just needed to figure out who would teach her to fight, and Damien was right.Be nicer to him, she’d get him to teach her. “Damien... Damien, I’m scared,” she whispered, her voice quiet. Let him protect you, she thought to herself, letting fear spread over her instead of trying to squash it like she normally does.
